2026 COLOR OF THE YEAR: WARM EUCALYPTUS

SUPPLIES YOU WILL NEED

STEPS
This was honestly the longest part of this project! It took 2 days to sand all 39 pieces of lumber. I used a variety of lumber sizes including 2x4, 2x2, and 1x4s. I started sanding with 80 grit followed by 220 grit sandpaper using my orbital sander.
Another tedious part of this project was cutting all of the pieces for the sectional. What I love about this project is that it’s completely customizable! You can build as many pieces as you need to fit your space. In total, my plan was to build 5 chairs and an ottoman. I cut all of the wood using my 10-inch miter saw.
**DIY TIP** Ensure your saw blade is sharp to minimize lumber tear out
Most of the lumber pieces for the sectional were joined together by pocket screws which require pocket holes. Pocket holes are holes drilled at an angle that create a strong joint between two pieces of wood while hiding the screws. This will give your project a clean appearance while ensuring it is also very sturdy. I used a pocket hole jig to drill 4 holes on the required boards.
Based on the plans, I used a combination of pocket screws and wood glue. I built 3 armless chairs, 2 armchairs and 1 ottoman.
Now to bring the sectional pieces to life! I used Valspar® One-Coat Solid Stain & Sealer in the 2026 Color of the Year Warm Eucalyptus 8004-28F! I had never used a solid stain before so I didn't know what to expect but this stain was super easy to apply using the Valspar® All Stain Flat 3-in Brush and Valspar® All Stain Short Rubber Handle Angle 2-in Brush. These two sizes allowed me to cut into the smaller corners and cover full boards for an even layer of stain.
If you know me, adding the final details to a project is so exciting. But first I had the stressful task of loading all 6 sectional pieces and all of the cushions, pillows, and decor in my Toyota Rav4 (all while it was 90 degrees outside). I played a serious game of Tetris before driving to my destination. I arranged the sectional in an L shape, added cushions and pillows in light, coordinating earthy shades, and did one final pillow chop. Then, this outdoor sectional was ready for many days of relaxation and socializing!
