Causes:

  • Painting in areas with poor ventilation or limited sunlight
  • Applying paint over existing mildew or mold
  • Using a low-quality paint not designed for moisture resistance

RECOMMENDED SOLUTIONS

  • Before painting, thoroughly clean all surfaces. Use a commercial mildew remover following manufacturer’s safety instructions.
  • Rinse the area well with clean water and allow the surface to dry completely before applying primer or paint.
  • For areas with consistent moisture exposure, consider upgrading the finish to satin or semi-gloss, which resists moisture better than flat finishes.
  • If the area is prone to recurring mildew, use Valspar® Stain-Blocking Bonding Primer/Sealer before applying your topcoat for added protection.
