Causes:

  • Improper surface preparation before painting
  • Applying latex paint over multiple layers of oil-based paint without proper bonding
  • Moisture seeping through the substrate from behind (e.g., leaking gutters and unsealed joints)

RECOMMENDED SOLUTIONS

  • Identify and correct any moisture source (leaks, gaps, poor ventilation) before repainting.
  • Scrape off all loose or peeling paint with a paint scraper or wire brush.
    Sand edges smooth to feather transitions between bare areas and remaining paint.
  • Wash the surface to remove dirt, chalk and mildew.
  • Apply one or two even coats of a recommended Valspar® exterior paint, following the spread rate and dry time instructions on the label.
